Why Kevin Rudd Dumped Malcolm Turnbull’s ETS
The federal government has put its proposed emissions trading scheme on the backburner until 2012, a decision widely portrayed as a politically-expedient move ahead of this year’s federal election. Whatever else may be said of the decision, it makes a nonsense of Malcolm Turnbull’s claim that opposing the ETS would lead to electoral oblivion for the federal Coalition. It is unlikely that Malcolm really believed this, but if he did, it was a serious misjudgement. Malcolm supported the ETS for the same reason Kevin Rudd dumped it: neither wanted to fight an election on the issue.
